Marriage brings new lessons every year. Fourteen years ago when we said, “I do,” we didn’t have all the answers, but we knew we loved each other. We used milk crates as chairs and a table in our first apartment until we could afford something more substantial. We were still in school and hardly made enough to live on, but we depended on God, and money always came from unexpected places whenever we were in need, like strangers paying for our food or random checks appearing in the mail. We had a lot of growing to do though, and certainly didn’t fight fair. We learned what it meant to become one, to show true love as Christ loves us, with submission and sacrifice, especially when it was difficult or we didn’t feel like it. We learned to set pride aside and keep God first, to not control the problem at hand but to surrender and pray. So here’s to more learning and growing, for fourteen years and into eternity. “For the Beauty of the Earth,” oil on panel. I started this painting a couple of years ago, but believe I finished it at the perfect time. God knows all things and His hand is in everything. Come what may, I already know the ending: God wins. In the meantime, even in the darkness, I look around and see His beauty in all of creation.

According to the WHO website, only those who are caring for Covid-19 patients should wear a face mask.

If you are healthy, wearing a mask will do more harm than good: breathing becomes shallow and more carbon dioxide is inhaled. Your warm, moist mask (which is being constantly touched and/or reworn) becomes a retainer for more bacterial growth.

If you're trying to stay healthy, washing hands with good old-fashioned warm soapy water is still key. Too much hand sanitizer kills off the good and bad bacteria and destroys your gut microbiome (fun fact: we have more microbial cells than human cells). Diverse gut flora means a stronger immune system, but to build that diversity you need to be exposed to the world around you (if you've ever heard the saying, "Let kids play in the dirt," numerous studies have shown that early exposure to bacteria will keep autoimmune diseases at bay throughout children's lives). Being quarantined indoors for extended periods will also lower our immune systems. We need fresh lungfuls of oxygen and copious amounts of vitamin D (the severity of Covid-19 is linked with extreme vitamin D deficiency). If wearing a mask eases your anxiety, that's great! However, masks should not be mandated, especially when using fear and bullying as tactics.

I can't help but think of the lasting psychological effects this virus will create: we need each other. We need hugs and handshakes. We need connection through eye contact, conversation and facial expressions. Masks hide, silence and alienate. If someone is sick and it would comfort them for me to wear a mask around them, I will absolutely do so. Otherwise, I choose not to live in fear and I pray more people take a stand. "Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9
