I have so much to celebrate-yesterday was our 16th I have so much to celebrate-yesterday was our 16th wedding anniversary and today marks our one year anniversary of beginning our 4000 mile bicycle tour across America. I still vividly recall the second morning of the trip: Bryan’s family had driven back home after dropping us off on the Virginia coast. We were completely alone. We’d spent the night in a church nursery and I woke up in a shock, remembering why I was there. “What are we doing?” I thought. “There’s no way we’ll make it, this is too big.” It’s surreal to be on the other side of those intimidating thoughts. There’s so much I can share, but for now, I’ll say this: don’t be the person blocking your path from living a life rich with experience. Put the phone down-you gain time, relationships deepen and memories are made; things that no one can take away from you. Don’t make excuses (and don’t blame others), but do learn to embrace each season. Be thankful and learn contentment. It took ten years before we accomplished our dream of a continental ride and it was more meaningful that we shared the adventure with our daughter. God’s lessons and timing are perfect; they may make no sense at all in the moment, but often a no or “just wait” leads to something more abundant. #transam #bicycletouring #bicycleacrossamerica #adventurecycling #bicyclefamily
I often do not feel worthy of being called a mothe I often do not feel worthy of being called a mother. In recent years I’ve struggled with my health, and hear myself repeating, “I’m too tired to play.” But then I recall my own childhood struggles. I can’t promise my daughter that she will have a happier childhood, but I’m determined to make eye contact, to absorb what she is saying, to memorize the rules to the newest game she created. I dance the silly dance and belt out the song (even in Trader Joe’s, something I never would have done before she was born!). My daughter has not lessened my quality of life, she has made it more abundant. Those little watching eyes make me determined to try harder and aim higher. My heart has grown bigger. The hurts and worry are deeper. The present is more cherished. Without children, mothers would not be. Children are treasures fiercely worth protecting. I may not always feel worthy of the name, but I am forever grateful for the honor to be my daughter’s mother.
