I often do not feel worthy of being called a mothe I often do not feel worthy of being called a mother. In recent years I’ve struggled with my health, and hear myself repeating, “I’m too tired to play.” But then I recall my own childhood struggles. I can’t promise my daughter that she will have a happier childhood, but I’m determined to make eye contact, to absorb what she is saying, to memorize the rules to the newest game she created. I dance the silly dance and belt out the song (even in Trader Joe’s, something I never would have done before she was born!). My daughter has not lessened my quality of life, she has made it more abundant. Those little watching eyes make me determined to try harder and aim higher. My heart has grown bigger. The hurts and worry are deeper. The present is more cherished. Without children, mothers would not be. Children are treasures fiercely worth protecting. I may not always feel worthy of the name, but I am forever grateful for the honor to be my daughter’s mother.

This was a quick sketch from life of my cat, Princ This was a quick sketch from life of my cat, Princess Buttercup. I had never intended on sharing it, but I also didn’t know it would be my last image of her. She passed away last night at a ripe age of fifteen. Bryan and I brought her home as a kitten just a few weeks after we got married in 2006. Pets hold a peculiar place in the heart. They’re not blood ties, but still an integral part of the family. What began as an act of newness and love matured into habit, like absently reaching down to scratch her behind the ears or refill her food bowl. But all that’s left are phantom purrs and untouched breakfast. I’m going to miss my most terrific napping buddy.
